The Castle Club

Founded in 1865, The Castle Club remains true to the traditions upon which it was established: friendship, fellowship, good conversation, and the enjoyment of convivial company.

The Castle Club incorporates The Rochester Book Society established in 1797.

Our Purpose

At its heart, The Castle Club is a dining and luncheon club, providing members and their guests with a welcoming environment in which to meet, relax, entertain, and exchange ideas. While the Club treasures its rich history and traditions, it remains vibrant and relevant today, bringing together an exceptionally diverse membership drawn from all walks of life, professions, and interests.

Beyond the Club itself, members participate in a wide range of affiliated societies and activities, including Golf, Cricket, Rugby, Mariners, Shooting, Rambling, Wanderers, and other special interest groups. These provide opportunities for shared experiences, enduring friendships, and the enjoyment of interests both old and new. Many of our social events and excursions also welcome partners, extending the spirit of fellowship beyond the Club’s walls.

Throughout the year, the Club hosts a programme of dinners, suppers, lectures, and social gatherings. Wherever possible, these feature distinguished speakers, notable local figures, or individuals with fascinating stories and experiences to share. Subjects range from local history and current affairs to sport, business, travel, military history, and the arts.

The Castle Club is proudly non-political and non-sectarian. Members are, of course, free to discuss the issues of the day and often do so with enthusiasm, humour, and differing opinions. Robust debate is welcomed, but always in the spirit of mutual respect, good manners, and friendship. Indeed, many memorable observations find their way into the Club’s famous Line Book, preserving the wit and character of Club life for future generations.

In an age where genuine social connection can be difficult to find, clubs such as The Castle Club continue to play an important role. They provide a place where friendships can flourish, experiences can be shared, and members can enjoy the camaraderie and support that come from belonging to a longstanding community.

For many, the Club offers not only social enjoyment but also a valuable sense of belonging, friendship, and wellbeing. More than 160 years after its foundation, The Castle Club remains what it has always been: a place where gentlemen can gather in good company, enjoy lively conversation, make lasting friendships, and contribute to a tradition that continues to enrich the lives of its members.
